"Being a mum has made me so tired. And so happy."

This month we are thinking of and sending our love to all the mothers, and mother figures, out there. We know ourselves that sometimes being a mum can be hard, lonely, and you feel like everything is out of your control with not enough hours in the day. Tina Fey really hit the nail on the head when she said that being a mum has made her so tired, and so happy!

Something seemingly as simple as going to the toilet by yourself is a distant memory (especially when the children are still teeny tiny). So, in celebration of Mother’s Day we are sharing some helpful hints and tips to help you wonder women out there punctuate your day with goodness, and create a sense of calm & ease.

“[Motherhood is] the biggest gamble in the world. It is the glorious life force. It’s huge and scary—it’s an act of infinite optimism.” – Gilda Radner

First up is the ancient Chinese healing method - Acupressure, which involves putting pressure with the fingers or the hand on certain points of the body. The pressure can unblock the flow of Qi to release tension and restore inner harmony. The great thing about acupressure is it is something you can do on your own to promote health, relieve stress and anxiety. Here is an exercise to try on your own to reduce anxiety, stress and overall tension.

Starting from the wrist, measure down with three fingers as shown in the picture to the right. Where your third finger touches the middle of your wrist is the acupoint. Take your thumb and apply firm pressure to this point until you feel some mild discomfort. Only apply enough pressure to interrupt the normal blood flow but not too much that it causes pain. Hold this pressure point and gently knead your thumb in a tight circular motion for about 2 minutes. Do this to both wrists and you will feel your anxiety descend immediately.

It’s also really important as a ‘nurturer’ to nurture YOU, through making a conscious effort to include foods that will build you up, every day. Good fats like avocado’s, coconut oil and nuts and seeds will give you that full feeling (just with plants!) and mean you are less likely to reach for a sugary snack mid-afternoon.

You can also consider using your senses to bring you firmly into the present moment and out of whatever story is playing in your head. We love a little hydrating spritz of a floral water, such as Alteya Organics Bulgarian Rose Water, mid afternoon to rebalance and calm. Rose has also traditionally been used for many years to help balance hormones, as well as improve our moods.

Remember that you are part of a big, wide world! So take note of the products you use around the home, and aim wherever you can to choose the right things. Our Nordics Organic Cotton Buds for example, are eco-eco-friendly, completely plastic free, bio-degradable and made from 100% bamboo.

Give your feet some love! We as a society are conditioned through shoe and sock wearing, to disregard our feet, yet they carry the weight of us every day! They are the body’s foundation, structured to support its weight and provide a mobile platform in a variety of terrains. Just imagine: if the foundation of a house is weak, stressed, or unhealthy, the entire structure begins to buckle. In the same way, problems in our feet can creep into other parts of the body and weaken our overall health and sense of well-being. Because the feet work in conjunction with the legs, knees, hips, and back, foot problems can lead to muscle tension elsewhere in the body—especially in the neck and shoulders—and intensify fatigue and irritability. Foot massage is a simple method for reducing stress and stimulating the body’s natural relaxation response. And best to do this just before bed so that you can then slip into an effortless slumber :-)

Beginning with your right foot, gently rub oil in small circular motions from the ankle to the toes; then from the ankle to the heels. Gently rub oil in small circular motions on the soles of the feet. Next, press your thumb on the place where the shin meets the top of your foot. Gently, slowly, drag your thumb across the top of your foot to the big toe. Return to the ankle and in the same way drag your thumb toward the second toe. Repeat this motion from the ankle to the third, fourth, and fifth toes. This initial treatment improves circulation and activates important marmas on the feet. Then cross your right ankle over your left knee and cup the side of your right heel in your left hand. Place your right hand on the top of the foot, lace your fingers between your toes, and push the foot inward, outward, and then in a circular motion. With your right thumb, apply pressure from the big toe to the heel along the inner border of the foot. Then drag your thumb from the root of your fifth toe to the heel. Make a fist with your right hand and press it against the foot, working it along the sole in a circular motion to activate a variety of energy points. Slowly pull each toe away from the foot, as though you are “popping” the joint, to remove stress. Then repeat the entire massage on your left foot. We recommend using  our Wooden Spoon Organic Body Oil in Lavender

If you feel the emotion bubbling up, LET IT OUT. If we continually push our feelings down then they can become trapped and start to manifest as physical pain. Only by letting the things that need to come out do just that can we create space for goodness to flow. And, if all else fails, know that tomorrow, everything will feel better. There is always a place inside of you where you know that everything will be alright..

Happy Mothers Day to you all and if you are still looking for that perfect gift, our Organic Rose Delight Gift Box is available for just £29 (down from £49) until the end of March (while stock lasts)
